Thoughts and Prayers
Thoughts and prayers
To show you care
About people who were once breathing.
who are now lying around, their bodies not achieving
To escape the bullets that reigned,
And killed or maimed
Them because someone who turned 18
Purchased a weapon called AR15.
Send thoughts and prayers.
And don’t forget to share
The ghastly pictures of people or children who once were
Alive with possibilities until this occurred
Lay wreaths of flowers
But never empower
Them with the safety mechanisms needed
To live in a world that’s heeded
A call to arm yourself because it’s your right
By gun manufacturers who enjoy the sight
Of the profits, they see soaring
While ordinary citizens lay broken and mourning
The loss of so many lives by mass shootings
But let’s focus on the possibility of looting
Of your property
Choosing automatic rifles as your commodity
Of protection
Never considering rejection
And thinking about the motive for arms
Coming from those higher voices who face no harm
Instead, they send thoughts and prayers.
Never brave enough to dare
Put legislation in place to stop
An ordinary person’s ability to shop
For a weapon used in war and fights
And deny shooters their rights
To unabashedly walk proud
A rifle on their shoulders saying loud
Today, I will kill
The blood of innocents will spill
Because things won’t change
Instead, meaningless thoughts and prayers will remain.
On the tongues of all people who can change
The laws but choose instead to remain
Safe, far away from any danger, and out of sight
Spreading love and light
Never exposed to violence.
Only thoughts and prayers to break their silence.
