Great article Ali Hall and this has been one of my bug bears.
The patriarchy however suggests that women are naturally at fault (as if it's in our DNA) to make false allegations of sexual violence or rape. Statistics indicate that not many women come forward to open cases, and only 1% make false allegations.

I am so tired of the "softening," of language against brutal, violent acts. If you notice it is done primarily to support men, not women.

My view is simple: The language must fit the crime. Rape is rape, not sexual assault because the word sexual also conjures up images of consent. Her saying No, in a "playing hard to get manner," that so many men still believe happens.

The linguistic gymnastics is enough to deter women from laying charges and mainstream media are no help.

Sorry, for the lengthy comment. As a survivor of heinous crimes, this always triggers me.

Thanks for a great article. 🙏🏾
