"All men are created equal," is how Jefferson saw it and he was right to a certain extent (at least in his mind)
If Black people were viewed as "domestic animals," then he did not see their humanity and if he did not see their humanity then his statement about equality of men would seem perfectly normal to him. Unless you see someone's humanity, it is impossible to treat them equally. Sally Hennings was NOT a mistress, but a slave who could not and more than likely did not consent (given her age and status).
The lies we tell to comfort oppressors is hurtful and disturbing. Thank you for the article.
